Winter Soldiers: Embedded With Veterans For Peace In A Blinding Blizzard
On a mission to end war
No one hates war more than soldiers. Over a decade ago, I had an opportunity to spend 24 hours inside the planning and execution cycle of an army dedicated to peace. Enlisting former soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and civilians, this ragtag group of volunteers came together for a demonstration in front of the White House. Protesting America’s continued presence in Afghanistan, the crowd heard speeches and sermons by famous opponents of war before marching to confront the DC Police right as a snowstorm began to peak. These people are not kidding when they talk about throwing themselves into the gears of the war machine. Some of them, such as the gentleman chaining himself to a light pole in this video, have been peace activists for decades. One might even call them militants of peace, for their activism is in fact a continuation of the discipline they learned in uniform.
Just sparing a thought for peace in time of war.
