So the hot summer fashion on the battlefields of Ukraine is anti-drone netting over the road approaches to the front. While it is hardly perfect, it is better than nothing, especially as fiber optic guided (FOG) drones proliferate. It’s funny how battlefield fashions come back into vogue, and this development is yet another recall of the First World War.
The Menin Road was among the most dangerous points on the Western Front. Exposed to German artillery observation, this vital supply route became an infamous graveyard of horses, men, and vehicles, especially the intersection called Hellfire Corner. During 1917, the British Army constructed a net along the road to conceal traffic. The road remained dangerous, but the net arguably made a material difference to the outcome of the battle.
